How long have you been in business?

I’ve been in business since 2008 after the birth of my second child.

Why did you start?

At the time, I was working to graduate from a Masters of Physiotherapy and had been designing birth announcements on the side. My clients kept asking if I provided the photography as well as the design service and, once my son was born, I decided to buy a camera and begin to photograph my children. I was always minded towards providing photography service for my announcement card clients and, with a lot of practice and patience, I decided to do so.

Tell us about your family? How many kids? Who watches them while you travel?

My family keeps me sane, grounded and incredibly busy with activities, rep sports, neighbourhood friends, recitals and birthday parties. lol. My husband Mike and I are raising three beautiful children aged 7, 9 and 11. They are charismatic, spunky, charming, intelligent and all round wonderful little humans. My husband often accommodates my travel schedule by handling school mornings and our plethora of after school activities on his own while I’m away.

Favorite part about your job?

The babies! They are so lovely. I adore working with these delicate new lives and their families. It’s wonderful to work with people in such a blessed and happy space and to be able to reflect their love for their growing families in portraits.

Favorite marketing tip? what did you do to get your name out there?

When I began working, I came from the world of birth announcement design and it was only natural to include birth announcements for all of my clients. This really help to spread my name as these cards were subsequently delivered to all of my clients’ friends and families.

Favorite baby supply item?

I would have to go with the Baby Shusher. I have a love affair with it! It’s small, compact and easy to pack. Parents adore it and it even come in app form. I used to work with a white noise machine in studio but always found myself “shushing” at the same time. Once I found the Baby Shusher, it was a whole new world!

Favorite prop

Probably my clients arms. There is nothing better than posing a baby naturally with their parents. I love the connection you are able to document and the natural feel of the imagery.

What does your future look like?

I hope my future looks bright, exciting, scary, full of surprises, with moments of sadness that help me to appreciate the moments of unimaginable joy and hopefully long. 😉

What is your message to your children about life and running a business?

I hope that they learn to apply themselves to a career that they feel passionately about. That they will be inspired to push through the hurdles to get to where they want to be. To know that it’s possible to live your life’s purpose and that it will take sacrifice, hard work, patience, humour, empathy, and everything you would throw into a lasting friendship or relationship. I hope that they will learn when to work and when NOT to work. That they will carve out time to develop themselves and their joy for life and prioritize their children, putting them ahead of their personal ambitions. Most of all, I hope they will know that I love them, would do anything for them, that they drive me crazy but all fill me with love… entirely.

What is something you wish you knew when starting out?

I wish I knew that this career would be more about left brained business thinking than creativity. That it would take a solid understanding of marketing, social media management, budgeting, editing and technical skill, coding and SO many more elements than simply documenting the love families share.
